吃天鵝肉的方法

今早收到學校給在籍的馬來西亞學生的電郵， 原文如下：

Dear All,

This is Judy from MEAO.. We are planning a trip to KL in early October on UG student recruitment and I would like to gather some more information from our current Malaysian students. Would you please reply this email and let me know which high school you graduated from?

We’ve been recruiting from Malaysia for some years and would like to continue the effort to recruit more good students from this country. Feel free to send me any suggestions that come into your mind on recruitment in Malaysia, or KL specifically.

We would also like to invite Malaysian student and professor to join our trip, and share their experience with local high school students. Please kindly let me know if you are interested. The trip is in the 1st week of October. My office would provide support on your flight tickets, hotel accommodation and daily meals.

要回复的有三點：

一、 哪間中學畢業；
二、 招收馬來西亞或是吉隆坡的good students的建議；
三、 去不去吉隆坡招生和宣傳城大。

第一點和第三點都不難答复， 頭痛的是第二點。

不要誤會， 頭痛的不是因為馬來西亞的good students難尋， 而是要把good students帶進城大。

招生， 尤其要招到出乎其類、 拔乎其萃的學生， 的不二法門， 就是提供第一流的教學， 包括頂尖的師資和氛圍。 如果教學第一流， 世界各地的good students都會自動送上門， 自發在門口排隊。 勞師動眾跑到別的國家宣傳或是打廣告， 是脫褲子放屁—— 多此一舉。 但如果教學不是第一流， 又怎會收到good students？

信中的good students， 按世俗的標準， 應該是指考試成績一流的學生。 而城大自己， 大學的世界排名一百開外， 按世俗的標準， 如果一到十名屬一流， 十一到二十屬二流， 以此類推， 香港城市大學還稱不上九流， 屬不入流。

不入流的大學要吸收一流的大學生， 是癩蛤蟆想吃天鵝肉。

要澄清的是， 前人說癩蛤蟆想吃天鵝肉， 是說做不可能的事， 是天方夜譚， 是做白日夢。 不對， 癩蛤蟆要吃天鵝肉， 雖然不易， 但也絕非不可能。 有兩條路可走： 一條是正途， 是康莊大道； 另一條則是小路歧途， 旁門左道， 不足為法。 分析如下：

老實說， 從在城大上課的第一天起， 就覺得這大學很菜， 不像是知識的殿堂， 像是賣菜的。 既然賣的是菜， 菜本身才是重點—— 菜新不新鮮、 可不可口、 有沒有農藥才是最重要的。 下重本買金紙銀紙把爛得不成模樣、 幾近發紫發酸的臭菜包裝起來， 是掩耳盜鈴， 白費心機， 於事無補。

既然是賣菜的， 城大的當務之急， 不是到處這裡那裡宣傳打廣告、 用金紙銀紙搞門面工夫， 而是壯士斷臂， 把殘根敗葉， 把那些沒有資格站在大學講台上的和那些沒有資格坐在大學座位上的， 統統掃地出門。 下重注招徠師級教授， 大幅收窄大學門檻， good students不請自來， 在校門外爭先恐後的盛況可期。

這是癩蛤蟆變身青蛙王子的正道。

話雖如此， 若是癩蛤蟆沒法變身， 但有錢， 也可以解決吃天鵝肉的煩惱。 可以說， 城大現在有的是錢。 有錢萬事通， 獎學金大派送， 是不愁沒有為五斗米折腰的good students投門的。 這也是為什麽有這麼多一流的good students， 如區區在下（一笑）自甘『墮落』投身於不入流的城大的原因。

這是城大招收good students的旁門左道。

城大這只癩蛤蟆想吃天鵝肉， 依我看， 搖身青蛙王子的康莊大道寸步難行， 走不通。 走化身財神爺的旁門左道， 想來才是上策。
